The land of Ireland is a unique place well known for its legends, folklore, and supposed supernatural beings. With peoples and cultures that pre date recorded history, the island has a magical quality about it.

From Leprechauns to Fairies, Sprites, and other beings, the supernatural and Ireland go hand in hand.

One of the most well-known creatures is the Pooka. (Also: Puca, Puka, Pookha and other spellings.) These spirits have a somewhat menacing reputation. Though some claim they can be helpful if properly appeased.

Never heard of them? No problem. Here’s a quick rundown to get you up to speed.

1. They Are Shapeshifters:

The Pooka can take several forms, including dogs, rabbits, goats, and even people. (Though they will usually have some animal features including pointy ears or cloven feet) However, the most famous form the Pooka takes is of a sleek and powerful black horse with glowing yellow eyes.
