As it says in scripture, “Pride goeth before destruction and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) Meaning that when a person becomes too self-assured, overconfident, and even arrogant, a reality check is usually not far away. Add alcohol to an already brash and cocky personality and the results can be disastrous.

This is what happened during the World Poker Tour event in September 2009 at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The World Poker Tour is a series of tournaments held during the year at various locations both inside and outside the United States. (Hence the tour) In addition to large prize money, the winner of each event is granted a seat at the championship tournament which is held at the end of each season.

The events I will be discussing occurred during the seventh event of the 2009–2010 season. I want to preface this by saying my intent is in no way to belittle, pick on, or insult the individual I will be talking about. In fact, it is because of my own past struggles with drinking that I can relate to and understand some of what went down and how quickly things turned sour.

Lessons To Be Learned
